What is dysbiosis?

Dysbiosis is a condition that is characterized by an imbalance of microbes. Most often a dysbiosis diagnosis will refer to your gut microbiome. Typically there are trillions of microorganisms inhabiting your gut microbiome. 

However, multiple things can change the type and quantity of microbes inhabiting your gut.

On a general basis, the balance of microbes differs from person to person. Families have specific strains passed down that do affect your health and genetics. This is where genetic predispositions to diseases comes from. Although this can cause an unhealthy balance and make you more susceptible to certain diseases, your lifestyle choices can change the balance you have allowing you to avoid the disease altogether.

We don’t know if dysbiosis is a symptom of disease or if the disease is a side effect of untreated dysbiosis, but we do know of some things that can cause an acute case of dysbiosis

  • Viral, bacterial, or fungal infections (even if they aren’t gut-related infections)
  • Antibiotic use — which is interesting since doctors sometimes prescribe antibiotics to control dysbiosis
  • Unhealthy diet

  • High stress levels
  • Poor sleep schedule
  • Other diseases or conditions

What treatments are often given for dysbiosis?

As we stated above, antibiotics are often prescribed to help with dysbiosis. This is with hopes of controlling the overgrowing microbes. Unfortunately, antibiotics are not discriminatory and deplete helpful microbes along with pathogenic ones. 

Doctors may prescribe:

  • Ciprofloxacin
  • Rifaximin
  • Co-trimoxazole 

Other treatments can include extremely restrictive diets like the low-FODMAP diet. While this can be helpful temporarily, the restrictions can cause malnutrition and this can lead to even more problems.

How to treat gut dysbiosis naturally

We know the things that can cause problems for our gut health and disrupt the balance of our microflora. Fortunately, sometimes this helps us to know how to fix it, too!

If you have mild dysbiosis you can try:

  • Getting a better sleep schedule
  • Add low to moderate amounts of exercise into your routine — studies found that just 30 minutes of exercise 3 times a week positively altered microdiversity 
  • Manage your stress and mental health
  • Include foods in your diet that support good gut health as much as you can tolerate. This includes prebiotics, probiotics, postbiotics, fiber, healthy fats, whole grains, and polyphenols.
  • Avoid antibiotics as much as possible and only take when absolutely necessary
  • Avoid alcohol and tobacco

Some of these things will help to improve your dysbiosis. Others if they’re something that’s causing your dysbiosis, can make it worse. So listen to your body and take note of what might be triggering your symptoms.
